Messer Street Former Manufactured Gas Plant Site Remediation

MT was contracted in two phases to remediate this former MGP site on the Winnipesaukee River. This project was the first full scale, comprehensive MGP site remediation to return a natural resource back to swimmable and fishable conditions.

MT isolated the source material by installing a sealed Waterloo sheet pile barrier. The sheet pile installation involved the unique challenge of removing and quickly replacing railroad tracks that ran across the site.

MT then excavated using our own excavators equipped with an environmental bucket, modified to fit into the narrow trench. MT also implemented surgical vacuuming techniques on the river bottom, using a diving team. MT removed and disposed of over 2,000 tons of contaminated soils and treated 60,000 gallons of water.

Near Phase I completion, MT was asked to locate and excavate the MGP source material Gas Holder. Within one month, MT removed almost 500 tons of hazardous soils and debris. MT's excavation operations and stabilization techniques minimized the amount of hazardous materials transported off-site.

For Phase II of the project, MT dredged the coal tar sediments using our environmental cable arm dredging buckets and in-house designed hydraulic clam buckets. The highly technical project involved dredging 17,000 tons of sediment and stabilizing approximately 2.5 acres of river and bay bottom with sand and gravel.

MT installed extensive temporary sheets, as well as special turbidity and environmental controls. During the most intense part of the project, the 30-day drawdown, MT worked additional shifts and six days per week to maximize the amount of materials removed.

During drawdown, we removed over 6,800 cubic yards, or 43% more than our minimum success criteria. Within an air tight and closely monitored temporary structure, MT dewatered, treated, and separated the sediments. MT installed our own Water Treatment System, treating and discharging 215,000 gallons of water.
