New Bedford Harbor Superfund SiteFor 30 years, New Bedford Harbor was contaminated by manufacturing plants discharging PCB waste into the waters. Cleanup of this harbor was one of the largest and most challenging hazardous clean-up projects in the country. MT was hired to conduct excavation, dredging, and sitework for this complex project. Innovative Dredging at the North Lobe MT was hired to conduct dredging and transportation. Prior to conducting dredging operations in the North Lobe of the project, MT performed a hydrogeographic survey of the areas to be dredged and input the data into our Global Positioning System (GPS) and dredge control software. Using the initial survey data , MT created a surface model of the existing and desired dredge elevations. These two surfaces were loaded into specialized dredge software, which provided real-time dredge information allowing dredge accuracy to the centimeter. MT performed dredging from barges, using our excavator with an environmental clamshell bucket. MT designed and constructed the environmental clamshell bucket which feature a sealed bottom design to limit water spillage during dredging. The dredged materials were loaded directly into a hopper barge alongside the dredge barge. Remediation of PCB-Contaminated River Sediment North Of Woods Street MT removed PCB-contaminated material from the Acushnet River, north of the Wood Street area at the New Bedford Harbor Superfund Site. MT began the project by constructing earthen and gated berms at each end of the river segment. After installing two 20" bypass pumps to divert the water around the bermed area, MT was able to excavate from the river with a reduced water level.
