Multiple Crews Implement Excavation & Dredging Plan
MT removed Coal Tar deposits in two portions of the Connecticut River in Holyoke, MA. MT simultaneously completed in-river dredging and shoreline dry work in the two portions by mobilizing multiple crews. We removed more than 15,000 tons of coal tar sediment from eight impacted areas that comprised the two site portions, located along a two and half mile section of the Connecticut River.
Due to the highly variable low and high river water levels and variable flow conditions, MT used specialized equipment and coordinated the timing of sediment removal activities with upstream hydroelectric dam operations. One of the keys to completing the work within schedule was the implementation of several measures to effectively remove materials. These included the use of specialized barges, which were designed and fabricated in MT's shop specifically for this project.
