Pownal Tannery Superfund Site Phase II Remediation

MT, along with our team member NL Construction, completed the Pownal Tannery Superfund fast track lagoon sediment stabilization and landfill construction project on schedule and within budget. The end result was a highly efficient on-site stabilization program that was completed within a compressed schedule.

The contaminants on the site consisted of hydrogen sulfide, VOCs, SVOCs, and metals. MT's on-site water treatment system was capable of treating 400 gpm and included 400,000 gallons of on-site storage capacity. Overall, MT moved approximately 350,000 tons of material.

After removing the clay overburden layer, MT stabilized the exposed sludge by mixing it with Portland cement. MT custom designed a lightweight power mixing attachment to perform the cement/sludge blending, allowing for high production and complete mixing of the very dense sludge materials. Over 80,000 tons of sludge were stabilized in a four-month period.
